How We StartedCollege Info

Lady Margaret Hall was founded in 1878 by Elizabeth Wordsworth in memory of Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII and well known in her day as a scholar of high birth. It was the first women's college in Oxford, providing single-sex education until the decision to admit men was made in 1979.

Positioned slightly outside the city centre in the north of Oxford, the college is set in quiet surroundings with large grounds banking on the River Cherwell. An amibitious building programme is now underway, with several new buildings to be built that will create a new quadrangle and provide better facilities for staff and students.

Lady Margaret Hall has one of the largest student bodies in Oxford, but it retains a very friendly atmosphere while upholding a strong working ethic. For more information on the college, please visit its official site.
